CWHL & Breast Ride Ever Get Ready To Stick It To Cancer!

The Canadian Women’s Hockey League (CWHL) and Breast Ride Ever (http://www.thebreastrideever.com/) are teaming up in November for a huge fundraiser in the Windsor area called “Stick It To Cancer.”

When the Montreal Stars play a two-game series against the Toronto Furies in a rematch of the Clarkson Cup Final at the Windsor Arena (572 McDougall St. Windsor) on November 26 (6 p.m.) and November 27 (12:30 p.m.) hockey fans have a chance to not only see some of the top female players in the world compete, but meet and skate with them on the ice after the Sunday game!

After both games, fans who bring their helmet and skates will be invited on ice to skate with the players. Fans will also have an opportunity to get autographs.

Windsor’s own Meghan Agosta will be playing one of her first games with the Stars.

“Windsor native Meghan Agosta has an enormous amount of offensive talent – and she’ll surely make her mark in these games, and all season long for us,” Stars Captain Lisa-Marie Breton-Lebreux says. “We are very excited to play in this important fundraiser event!”

Individual game tickets for adults (18 and older) are $15; seniors (65 and older) and children are $10. Children three and under get in free. Tickets for both games are available in a package – adults for $25 and $15 for seniors and children.

The proceeds from “Stick It To Cancer” will benefit the Windsor & Essex County Cancer Centre Foundation (the fundraising arm of the Windsor Regional Cancer Centre) for the purchase of a Endobronchial Ultrasound (EBUS) for Cancer diagnostics and for their Seeds4Hope Cancer Research Program), and The Hospice of Windsor and Essex County for community-based services.

To help raise additional funds, an after party event has been organized for after the game on November 26 at The Blind Dog,

. Tickets are $22 if purchased in advance and $25 the day of the show for fans over 18. People will get to hang out with all the players and see a great line-up of local bands.

2012 WORLD UNDER-17 HOCKEY CHALLENGE OPEN FOR BUSINESS

Windsor, ON – The 2012 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge Host Committee officially declared itself “Open For Business” at a Media Conference held earlier today at the WFCU Centre in Windsor.

Ever since the announcement in July that the prestigious Hockey Canada event was coming to Windsor Essex from December 28, 2011 to January 7, 2012, the Host Committee has been working to put infrastructure in place for the event featuring 5 teams representing Canada (Atlantic, Quebec, Ontario, West, Pacific), and 5 international squads (USA, Czech Republic, Russia, Germany, Sweden).

The official game schedule was released today and includes 10 games at each of the WFCU Centre, the Vollmer Culture and Recreational Complex in LaSalle, and Tecumseh Arena. The UCCU Complex in Amherstburg and the Essex Sports Centre Complex will play host to exhibition games. The Bronze and Gold Medal games will be played in Windsor.

The 2012 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge logo was officially revealed today by Windsor Spitfires’ Co-owner and Governor Peter Dobrich, who is also the 2012 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge Event Chair. He also spoke about the “Paint The Town Red and White” program and encouraged fans and business owners to embrace the event to generate national pride in the same manner as the Vancouver Olympics.

Event mascot Puckster was introduced today and will be spotted at minor hockey games, schools and charity events in Windsor Essex. There was also a call for event volunteers and local business sponsors with more information available under the 2012 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge section of www.hockeycanada.ca.

Five Canadian teams, five international teams, and the future of Canadian Hockey on display; it’s all happening this winter in Windsor Essex, and with ticket sales starting October 4^th, it’s “Open For Business” for the Host Committee of the 2012 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge.

Windsor Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Academy Receives Several Awards

Several Winners and TEAM CANADA 3-peats!!!

The Students of the Windsor Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Academy received several awards this past Saturday in a tournament held in Warren Michigan. The tournament brought a wide range of grapplers, which included Brazilian Jiu Jitsu practitioners, wrestlers and MMA fighters.

The medal tally at the end of the event was 14 Gold, 7 Silver and 3 Bronze medals.

Following the tournament was another very exciting match-up as members from Team Canada and from Team USA battled it out for honour. The country vs country match up was well received and kept the audience riveted to the very end as after 12 matches, it was tied at 6 a piece. The hero of the day, Marco Carbone in the heavy weight division, battled hard and took Team Canada to victory for the third year in a row. Team Canada consisted of students from the Windsor Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Academy with Instructor Ron Dupuis and from the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Academy of Windsor and Instructor Jeff Robert (yes 2 different schools).

WFCU CENTRE SELECTED TO HOST 2012 SKATE CANADA SYNCHRONIZED SKATING CHAMPIONSHIPS

First time to be held in Windsor – and first ever Skate Canada event

to be executed by a Local Organizing Committee

Windsor, ON – Global Spectrum Facility Management, in conjunction with Skate Canada, announced today that Windsor, Ontario will host the 2012 Skate Canada Synchronized Skating Championships at the WFCU Centre February 23 through February 25, 2012. This is the first time the city has hosted this event, and it is also the first time that the Skate Canada Synchronized Skating Championships will be planned and executed by a Local Organizing Committee.

“Western Ontario has proven over and over again that they have some of the best figure skating fans in the country,” said William Thompson, Skate Canada CEO. “Fans can expect entertaining competition in every category and with the top two senior teams qualifying for the 2012 ISU World Synchronized Skating Championships it will certainly be an exciting event.”

“We are thrilled to have been selected to work with Skate Canada as the host skating community for the 2012 National Synchronized Skating Championships. The Local Organizing Committee, represented by the Sun Parlour Skating Region, Tourism Windsor Essex Pelee Island and the WFCU Centre, promises to bring a first class event to the region in February 2012. This event will have a positive impact on our local economy and we look forward to the opportunity to enhance our relationship with Skate Canada and our image as a Sports Tourism destination” said the Local Organizing Committee.

The 2012 Skate Canada Synchronized Skating Championships will bring approximately 1,000 skaters from across the country to the city. The event will bring in excess of $800,000 to the area and use approximately 1,000 hotel room nights.

Teams will compete for national titles in the senior, junior, open, intermediate and novice categories. The top two senior teams will represent Canada at the 2012 ISU World Synchronized Skating Championships in Gothenburg, Sweden from April 13-14, 2012.

Skate Canada, the national governing body responsible for the development and administration of skating in Canada, is the largest figure skating association in the world. With over 4,800 registered coaches, skating programs for athletes of all ages are offered at nearly 1,300 skating clubs and schools across the country. Skate Canada is an association dedicated to providing every Canadian the opportunity to learn life skills while experiencing the power, strength and creativity of one of Canada's premier sports.

In 2011, Skate Canada produced two world champions, Patrick Chan in senior men’s and Andrei Rogozine in junior men’s. 2010 Olympic Champions Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir won the world ice dance silver medal.

The Breast Ride Ever, a not-for-profit organization in its second year, has partnered with the Canadian Women’s Hockey League to bring Stick It To Cancer! to Windsor, ON, Canada November 25-27, 2011. Windsor/Essex County enjoys an eclectic mix of things to explore such as a unique shoreline, world class regional wines, unique culinary experiences, parks, festivals, and historic sites~ something for everyone! We are very proud to offer the opportunity to watch some of the best female hockey players in the world face off in Windsor, ON on November 26th and November 27th, 2011, for a great cause.

The Canadian Women’s Hockey League (CWHL) is a not-for-profit organization the league is dedicated to raising the profile of women’s hockey while providing a place for the best female hockey players in Canada – and around the world – to train and compete. The league offers fans an international-grade showcase for the most talented female hockey players, at an affordable price. Our game is speed, finesse and skill. The CWHL is entering its fourth season as the premiere Women’s hockey league in the world. Since its inception in 2007, the Canadian Women's Hockey League has fully supported its teams in full seasons of home/away games, as well as charity and exhibition games in the community. The Breast Ride Ever, a not- for profit organization, is dedicated to raising awareness about Breast Cancer and early detection and additional funds that stay local here in Windsor/Essex County. Together with the support of many towards these efforts, The Breast Ride Ever has held a number of events including its annual motorcycle Poker Run throughout the Windsor and Essex County area. This message is vitally important as Breast cancer is the most common cancer among Canadian women (excluding non-melanoma skin cancer). In Canada in 2011 an estimated 23,400 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer (5,100 will die of it)and an estimated 190 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer (55 will die of it). One in nine women is expected to develop Breast Cancer during their lifetime and one in twenty-nine will die of it. WINDSOR, ONTARIO TO HOST 2012 WORLD UNDER-17 HOCKEY CHALLENGE

CALGARY, Alta. – Hockey Canada, in partnership with the Ontario Hockey Federation, announced Wednesday that Windsor, Ont., will host the 2012 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge from December 29, 2011 to January 4, 2012. This will mark the sixth time in the 26-year history of the tournament that it will be held in Ontario.

The 2012 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge will follow the same format as previous years – five Canadian entries (Atlantic, Ontario, Pacific, Quebec, West) will be joined by five international teams, with two groups of five teams. The top two teams from each group will advance to the semifinals, while the remaining three teams from each group will cross over for placement games.

The 27-game tournament will be centered out of the WFCU Centre, home of the OHL’s Windsor Spitfires, but will feature games in partner venues. The tournament host committee is currently working with communities in the Windsor area to determine which will host satellite games. The Windsor region has successfully hosted a number of hockey events, including the CHL/NHL Top Prospects Game, OHL All-Star Game and CHL Subway Super Series.

Ticket information for the 2012 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge will be released later in the summer.

“The World Under-17 Hockey Challenge, as the first step of the Program of Excellence, is one of Hockey Canada’s most important events,” says Bob Nicholson, president and CEO of Hockey Canada. “We have no doubt Windsor will do a first-class job in hosting the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge in 2012.”

Hockey Canada originally awarded the 2012 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge, along with the 2011 tournament, to Winnipeg, Man., in October 2009. The 2011 tournament was a tremendous success, setting a record for single-game attendance with 12,060 at the MTS Centre for the gold medal game. However, with the recent awarding of an NHL franchise to the City of Winnipeg and True North Sports and Entertainment, Hockey Canada and True North mutually agreed for True North to put its focus on the return of the Jets and made the decision to relocate the 2012 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge.

Windsor joins Sudbury (1992), Kitchener (1998), Timmins (2000, 2010) and London (2008) as Ontario host cities for the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge.

Since the first World Under-17 Hockey Challenge (then known as the Quebec Esso Cup) in 1986, more than 1,100 NHL draft picks have played in the tournament, including nine of the last 11 first-overall selections (Ilya Kovalchuk, 2001; Rick Nash, 2002; Marc-André Fleury, 2003; Alexander Ovechkin, 2004; Erik Johnson, 2006; Patrick Kane, 2007; John Tavares, 2009; Taylor Hall, 2010; Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, 2011).

The 2012 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge will bring together the top players in the world born in 1995 or later. The regional under-17 program is the first step in Hockey Canada’s Program of Excellence. Many players who compete at the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge go on to represent Canada with the National Men’s Under-18 Team, National Junior Team and National Men’s Team.

WINDSOR STARS’ SOCCER TEAM TO OFFER SOCCER CAMPS FOR YOUTH

Youth can train with their favourite Star at game day camps.

(June 28, 2011 - WINDSOR, Ontario) The Windsor Stars’ Soccer Team has announced soccer camp dates, providing local youth a chance to train with their favourite Star. Soccer training will include passing, ball control, defending, finishing and goalkeeper training for youth ages 6 to 11.

“It’s always been our intention to give back to the community. Our mandate from the very beginning was to make the Windsor Stars a community team that can engage the youth and provide opportunities for them.” says president, Filip Rocca.

“I cannot wait to start working with the youth in the city and help them achieve their dreams.” vice president, Gino Berardi explains.

Training dates are July 9 and 16, August 13 and 20, September 10, 17 and 24, and October 1; the camps run from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the home of the Windsor Stars (Windsor Stadium).

Registration is $60 per youth player, $100 for two siblings and includes one youth ticket to a Windsor Stars’ home game on one of the camp days, a chance to meet the players and get their autographs before the game, and hot dogs and refreshments after camp.

Foundation digs $10k boost through Biz Xcellent fundraiser

People, promotion and place key factors to success

Tecumseh, Ont. The Kidney Foundation of Canada volleyed for a 10k boost through net revenue profits generated by The Biz X Beach Jam Volleyball Tournament held on Saturday, June 18, 2011 at On the Beach (On the Green). The 10k amount represented a 50% spike from its planned revenue goal of $5,000 for 2011 where over 118 participants, volunteers and staff were in attendance for this event.

According to Fund Development & Chapter Manager, Mike Brennan “people, promotion and place rallied the success of this event, which will benefit the Foundation,” in support of raising funds toward stimulating innovative research while increasing awareness of the Foundation’s programs and services locally throughout Windsor-Essex County that benefit approximately 4,000 individuals directly affected by kidney disease or on dialysis.

“The Biz X Beach Jam was a sizzling success and On the Beach was the perfect place to host this summer time fundraiser. I wish to thank the entire committee for all their hard work -- it definitely paid off!” said Deborah Jones, publisher for Biz X Magazine.

In terms of partnership and promotion for the event, “we had a splendid core group of sponsors led by Biz X Magazine, In Play! Magazine, RBC Royal Bank, On the Beach, Bank and 100.7 & 95.1 The Rock,” adds Brennan.

“Biz X and In Play magazines were proud to sponsor this volleyball tournament for the Windsor & District Chapter of the Foundation. Not only did the beach jam raise funds for a very worthy cause but it also gave local employees the chance to have a little fun in the sun and get to know their co-workers better. We definitely look forward to next year's tournament becoming bigger and better than ever!” said Jones.

Of special note, RBC Royal Bank fielded 9 Teams while promoting the event throughout the region amongst its branches and making a significant financial contribution in combined pledges.

The Windsor & District Chapter also made a strategic move to host this event at On the Beach in Tecumseh. “This is Southwestern Ontario’s finest outdoor volleyball venue,” said Brennan.

Team Cole consisting of members Gabriel Bruzzese, Kyle Williamson, Ryan Le, Kelly Paolini, Erin Murphy and Corey Cole dominated the field and commanded the best of 3 final 21-9 and 21-11 respectively over Team Landry to win the $1,000 cash purse before donating $100 back. “It was an excellent event and fundraiser,” said Cole.

Windsor's Border City Brawlers Hold Free Skate

The Border City Brawlers, Windsor's exciting new roller derby league, are holding their second free skate at the historic Windsor Armouries on Saturday June 19, 2011. In line skates are welcome, (there is limited availability of rental skates) and helmets are strongly recommended for those participating. Free refreshments will be provided as well as hot dogs and baked goods. In addition you can meet the members of the Border City Brawlers and see them scrimmage at 2:45 pm so those who are interested can discover what this exciting sport is all about.

The Brawlers first free skate was held March 18, 2011 and the league was encouraged by the overwhelming public support. The first event saw a turnout of roughly 150 people, many of whom expressed an interest in seeing roller derby in Windsor.

While the Border City Brawlers and the sport of roller derby are relatively new to the city, the league is already 40 members strong. It's members come from across the county and from various walks of life. The Brawlers have been gaining attention for not only bringing the sport to the area, but also for holding well-attended community events, raising awareness of the league and introducing families to the sport of roller derby and re-introducing families to roller skating.

The Border City Brawlers are Windsor's first women's flat track roller derby league. Flat track roller derby is an exciting and fast-paced sport which has exploded in popularity over the past few years. The Brawlers, like most other leagues, are run "by the skaters, for the skaters" meaning the athletes are the owners of the league. The Brawlers recently recruited many new members and are looking forward to a tournament in July.

The Italian Canadian HandiCapable Association (ICHA) is an organization that works closely with both physically and mentally challenged children and adults in our community.

They are pleased to announce that they are again planning to host the 9th Annual Fishing Derby which offers these wonderfully gifted people the opportunity to go fishing.

The event will be supervised by local pro-fisherman in a controlled atmosphere to ensure maximum safety and fun.

The ICHA Fishing Derby will be a live release program, supported by the MNR (Ministry of Natural Resources), OFHA (Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters), The Canadian Coast Guard, Outdoor Company and Local Bait & Tackle Shops.

Also attending the event Italo Labignan, host of the Canadian SportFishing show, and his camera crew to shoot clips of the event to be aired on TSN this coming season.

OHF Removes Body Checking from Recreational Hockey

The Ontario Hockey Federation’s (OHF) Minor Council met on Friday April 29^th to discuss the minor programs and among the topics was body checking in recreational hockey.

The OHF Minor Council unanimously endorsed the following motion:

Effective the 2011 – 2012 season body checking will be removed from all age divisions of House League and House League Select hockey.

House League and House League Select make up the majority of the OHF playing membership. The majority of House League hockey was already non body checking, which made it practical to standardize the rule across the entire membership. The extension of this decision to House League Select was similarly practical since Select teams are formed out of House League registered hockey players.

The OHF continues to review the delivery of all levels of hockey in order to create a safe and fun environment for all of its participants. Removing body checking at House League and House League Select is a positive decision for player recruitment and safety.

The removal creates a safer environment for new players that join the game at any age to develop the fundamental skills of skating and puck handling without the concern of being intentionally hit by another player.

At the end of the day hockey is a sport intended to give health benefits and life lessons to participants, and the OHF wants to highlight these core attributes of the game. With this new rule change, more players and parents will feel safer in these leagues and bring the focus back to the basics of the ‘good old hockey game’.

The OHF is one of three Hockey Canada Branches operating in the Province of Ontario and is the largest of all thirteen across Canada. The OHF is comprised of seven Member Partners and has a membership base that represents over forty percent of Hockey Canada.

Border City Brawlers to Attend City Community Consultation Meeting in Search of Permanent Home

The Border City Brawlers, Windsor's first roller derby league, will be attending he City of Windsor's public consultation meeting in which the future of two existing community centres: Adie Knox Herman Recreation Complex and College Avenue Community Centre will be discussed. The Brawlers would like to see the city allow Adie Knox to be used as a roller rink.

The public meeting will be held tonight (May 4, 2011) at Mackenzie Hall (3277 Sandwich Street) in the Main Gallery from 7 to 9pm.The consultation will be chaired by Ronna Warsh, Community Development & Health Commissioner for the City of Windsor, with support from neighbourhood groups and Parks and Recreation.

Many members of the Border City Brawlers have decided to roller skate to this evening's public meeting to show their support for the idea of turning Adie Knox into a roller rink. The Brawlers, who still need a permanent home, would like to see a roller rink back in the city and Adie Knox would be a perfect fit. When the rink isn’t being utilized by the league for practice and bouts it could be open for public skating.

Travel teams from other cities will come to Windsor for bouts (games), the city will make money from concessions and with a permanent home the league can host tournaments and bring in teams from both sides of the border

Additionally, a roller rink would not only create several jobs but would also include the opportunity for an entrepreneur to open a pro shop as currently league members have to travel to London or Michigan for skates and to buy equipment. The league would like to see monies spent on skates and equipment in the community and would support the idea of a pro shop in Windsor.

Overview

It is Belle River Minor Baseball's mission to provide each player with the opportunity to

play baseball at a competitive level in order to experience and to develop life skills such

as leadership, teamwork, discipline, sportsmanship, preparation, and commitment.

Here is a few points as to where they would spend the money:

1 - Fix the dugout at one of the diamonds we play on. The dugout is too small for all the players

to be in the dugout at the same time, so some of the players have to wait behind the dugout.

2 - Help offset the cost for tournament fees. With the continuing increases to rates, it is

making it harder for their club to compete in several tournaments a season.

3 - Purchase new baseball equipment, as every season are equipment gets

more worked in, but most of it closer to broken then worked in.

Belle River Minor Baseball Community Benefit

Belle River Minor Baseball gives the community a sense of community.

We all have a goal for helping the kids of the community play baseball

and everyone a place to watch baseball. By improving the fields, the

equipment and competing in more tournaments this will improve the skill of

Inaugural season kicks off on May 7, 2011, at Windsor Stadium

WINDSOR, Ontario, April 28, 2011 – Windsor brings back pro soccer to the border city following a

three-year absence. The Windsor Stars––the new Canadian Soccer League, professional soccer

team––will play its inaugural home opener, taking on the Montreal Impact Academy on May 7 at

Windsor Stadium.

Anticipation for the home opener is growing for Filip Rocca, restaurateur and president of the Stars.

It’s taken nearly a year, but Rocca’s efforts have paid off. “As with any new experience, you never

know what to expect. I’m very proud of what we have achieved so far in terms of our team and

sponsors. As a non-profit, the support from our sponsors and the community is fundamental to our

success. The hard work involved in making this team a reality is well worth the effort seeing the

excitement from the kids and having a professional soccer team in Windsor.” says Rocca.

“It is truly something special to see your dreams unfold before your eyes. It is an honour to bring

professional soccer back to Windsor and restore the prestigious sport of soccer in our community. I

cannot wait to start working with the youth in the city and helping them achieve their dreams.” vice

president, Gino Berardi explains.

The team was born out of a need to create an avenue for youth players in Windsor-Essex, both girls

and boys, to advance in their soccer careers and to continue chasing their dreams through

development and recruitment.

“It’s exciting to have pro soccer back in Windsor. The team will be very competitive and enjoyable to

watch.” says Coach Jeff Hodgson.

The team looks forward to entertaining fans on the field and giving back to the community off the field.

They hope that the experience you take home with you after a game keeps you coming back to enjoy

more games with your family and friends. They are also excited to be offering special events and

services for youth in Windsor-Essex, including meet the players nights, year-round youth camps,

game-day youth matches, ‘Practice with the Stars,’ scholarship services, and much more.

The team asks for support from the residents of Windsor-Essex. “It will be a long, tough road ahead,

but we look to take one step at a time.” says Coach Steve Vagnini. “[Our] first step is the Montreal

Impact Academy on May 7, and we need as much support from the community as we can get. That

support will be our 12th player on the field and will make all the difference for us and the experience

everyone takes away from each game.”

East for $7 in advance for adults, $5 for children 12 and under.

Game day tickets will be $10 for adults, $7 for children 12 and under.

About the Canadian Soccer League

The Canadian Soccer League (CSL) is Canada's only professional soccer league and is a

continuation of earlier leagues, the National Soccer League (NSL), the Canadian National Soccer

League (CNSL) and the Canadian Professional Soccer League (CPSL), going back more than 80

years.

The league is in direct membership with the Canadian Soccer Association, Canada`s national

governing soccer body and has a mandate for expansion on a regional basis across Canada.

The Canadian Soccer League is a very physical league with a lot of back and forth excitement. It is a

ANN ARBOR, Mich. - The U.S. fell to Canada by a 3-1 score here tonight at the Ann Arbor Ice Cube in a game prior to the 2011 International Ice Hockey Federation World Women's Championship. The U.S. squad was made up of 20 of the 30 players vying for a spot on the U.S. Women's National Team, while Canada was skating with its final 21-player tournament roster. The two teams will face off again tomorrow night at 7 p.m. EDT before the U.S. roster is announced on Saturday (April 9). The game can be viewed live at USAHockey.FASTHockey.com. Jen Schoullis (Erie, Pa.) scored for the U.S., while Brianne McLaughlin (Sheffield Village, Ohio) made 18 saves in her first-ever action against the Canadian National Team. In a scoreless opening frame, the shots were 9-8 in favor of Canada. The U.S. penalty kill was successful on the team's only infraction of the frame, holding the Canadians shotless during the two-minute advantage. Canada scored three consecutive goals in the second period to take a 3-0 lead before the U.S. tallied late in the stanza to make it 3-1. First, Canada's Sarah Vaillancourt drove up the left side and shot the puck inside the near post at 1:55, then Meaghan Mikkelson notched a goal just after the Americans' first power play had expired at 9:14. Jayna Hefford kept the Canadian momentum going at 13:40 when she scored on a shorthanded breakaway, but the U.S. responded less than three minutes later as Schoullis, who is looking make the U.S. Women's National Team roster for the first time, scored at 16:39. City Sport Fields Remain Closed

Baseball diamonds will officially open Saturday, April 30 and soccer fields will open Saturday, May 14, weather permitting.

Parks and Recreation limits access to the fields in early spring to allow the grass to re-establish itself after winter. In early spring, the turf is young and very tender and susceptible to damage. After a few weeks of warmer dry weather, the grass has grown stronger and more mature. The fields are then ready for active play. Allowing teams to play on wet fields could have long-term effects that seriously damage the turf.

Organized play on citywide baseball, soccer and cricket grounds should be avoided until the fields have an opportunity to dry and the grass to grow.

ASSIST program earns charitable organization status

(Windsor, Ontario, Thursday, March 10, 2011) – The ASSIST program should be able to help even more children from financially vulnerable families participate in organized sports now that it has been officially granted charitable organization status, according to one of its founders.

“Up until now we’ve had to turn money away from potential donors because we were unable to issue tax receipts,” explained ASSIST board chairman Mike Dugal. “Now that we can do this, we expect we’ll be able to collect more donations and ultimately help a lot more families.”

ASSIST is a grassroots group of people with a lifelong passion for sports committed to raising funds to help kids experience the joy of participating in organized games. Since its inception in 2007, ASSIST has raised thousands of dollars and helped more than 70 families by defraying some of their expenses so their kids could register to play in organized sports leagues.

The organization has relied mainly upon individual donations while many corporate donations were turned down because businesses require receipts for income tax purposes, a service ASSIST was unable to provide without charitable organization status.

The move has already borne fruit. Dana Young, a lawyer from Clarks Barristers and Solicitors, the law firm which handled the legal process of incorporating the organization celebrated the group’s new status by coordinating the its first tax-receiptable donation of more than $2,000 to the cause, which came at the recommendation of her 14-year-old son who plays hockey with a local minor association.

“We were happy to help out,” said Young. “ASSIST does so many wonderful things for our community and we wanted to celebrate the group’s new success by being the first to contribute in its new form.”

Earning its new status couldn’t have come at a better time. This Saturday, the group will host 24 Hours of Hockey, its annual premiere fundraiser, at South Windsor Arena. The format is simple: teams that register play in one-hour-long three-on-three games and a continuous tally is kept for each side. Players are required to submit a minimum pledge of $20 and previous events have generated average revenue for the association of about $10,000.

“We’re hoping that having charitable status may increase the amount of corporate donations that we’re able to accept for this and other fund-raising events,” said Dugal.

PARTICIPANTS, WALK UPS AND SPECTATORS TO ENTER THROUGH COMMUNITY RINKS ENTRANCE

Have you ever wanted to give the fastest sport on skates a go? That was the goal of over 11,000 intrepid male and female adrenaline junkies from across Canada who registered online for the chance to compete against the world’s top ice cross downhill skaters in Quebec City. After a random lottery selection, 220 daredevils from Windsor will be competing for a spot in the Red Bull Crashed Ice World Championship 2011. Check out the action at the WFCU Centre—home of the Windsor Spitfires—on February 11th at 5:30pm.

The participants—200 men and 20 women—will compete in individual speed trials on a flat ice surface in a traditional indoor hockey rink. The top skaters (5 men and 1 woman from the Windsor qualifier) who demonstrate skating skill, agility, strategy, and strength will move on to participate in the main event in Quebec City, where consecutive heats of four skaters will race head to head in a double elimination bracket (based on time).

New in 2011: There is such a thing as a second chance! Red Bull Crashed Ice is now allowing 50 walk-up spots per qualifying city (as time permits and registration allows). The 50 walk-ups (first come, first serve) will join the 200 men and 20 women selected via the lottery for each qualifier.
The ultimate challenge for anyone on skates, Red Bull Crashed Ice is a combination of hockey, downhill skiing, and boarder cross, featuring an urban ice track packed with massive drops, hairpin turns, big-air jumps, step-ups, drop-offs, and gaps. Red Bull Crashed Ice World Championship 2011 showcases four races in total that are set to take the sport of ice cross downhill to a new level.

Icy Action Ahead
With more than 11,000 registrants nationwide – 226 in Windsor alone – only the quickest and sharpest men and women will travel to Quebec City to tackle the monolithic 600m urban ice track (with a 60m vertical).

ASSIST Announces New Format for Annual Fundraiser

(Windsor, Ontario, Saturday, Jan. 29, 2011) – The ASSIST group, a local charity which helps children from financially vulnerable families register to play in organized minor sports associations, will implement a new format for its most important annual fundraiser.

“24 Hours of Hockey” will be held on March 12, 2011 at South Windsor Arena. The format is simple: teams that register play in one-hour-long three-on-three games and a continuous tally is kept for each side.

In previous years, the game was played over a continuous 24-hour period. For this year’s event, however, the ASSIST group has secured both ice surfaces at the rink and the games will be played on each pad over a 12-hour period.

“We believe this is a much better system because it eliminates the need to have teams playing during the wee hours of the morning,” said Mike Dugal, Chair of the ASSIST Board. “Those were usually difficult time slots to fill, so we’re hoping this new format will help increase the number of teams that participate, which will allow us to help more families.”

The game is open to all players regardless of ability, skill level or affiliation. Each player is required to submit a minimum pledge of $20 and prizes are awarded for top pledge collectors. Previous events have usually generated an average of about $10,000 in revenue.

Since its inception, ASSIST has raised more than $56,000 and helped nearly 100 families. Last year, the organization was helped by generous donations from Hockey Canada and CBC’s Hockey Night in Canada Help Fund.

On Sunday, January 2, “Battle of the Boys” will see Team Windsor Essex square off against the Windsor Spitfires at 11:00 a.m. at the WFCU Centre. Tickets are available for $5.00 at Blades Pro Shop in the WFCU Centre, at Devonshire Mall customer care stations, and Skate Pro in Tecumseh Arena.

On Friday, January 14, the Countdown to Kelowna Youth Dance will rock the Teutonia Club from 7:00 to 11:00 p.m. Students in grades 7, 8 and 9 are welcome to come and enjoy the celebration (student card required for high schoolers). Windsor Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Academy Strikes Gold In Michigan

The Students of the Windsor Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Academy received several awards this past Sunday, December 5 2010, for their hard work from the past year of tournament competition. The awards ceremony and following tournament were held at the Roseville Recreation Centre in Roseville Michigan. The competitors received points for competing in the tournaments, receiving 100 points for a win, 80 points for second or silver, 60 points for third or bronze and 40 points for fourth. Wins are counted as submissions or in accumulated points from various techniques utilized by the competitors. In order to be considered for the championship belts or plaques for second and third, the competitors must compete in a minimum of 2 of the 4 competitions. The points are tabulated for the year and champions receive a belt with their name on it, second place receives a large plaque and third a smaller plaque.

LaSalle, Ontario – Kevin McIntosh has been around hockey all his life, as a player, as a coach and finally as the Vipers General Manager.

On Wednesday night he will be honored by the Ontario Hockey Association in an official on ice ceremony for the awarding of the Crystal Puck. .

The award recognizes a team representative who not only provides exemplary service and dedication to his team and organization, but also to the OHA and the game of hockey.

A formal presentation is scheduled for Wednesday, Nov. 17 at the Vollmer Centre before the Vipers Jr. B Hockey game at 7 p.m.

“Kevin has worked within the association for years and has established himself as a person who’s always first to volunteer his time with our programs and initiatives,” says Mark Ellis, OHA Executive Director. “He has tremendous passion and commitment for the game of hockey, which rubs off on everyone around him.”

The award recognizes Kevin’s service to the association and winning the two of the last three junior B Sutherland Cup championships – the first in 2008 with the Tecumseh Chiefs and the second, in 2010, with the LaSalle Vipers.

McIntosh credits the Vipers organization for bringing together values of family, education and hockey to make a winning team.

“Hockey is more than just a game – and at the same time, there’s more to life than just hockey. These are the things the coaching staff and I teach our players.

“We stand behind the formula of ‘commitment, self-discipline, teamwork, honesty and integrity’ – the human traits necessary for success in whatever field our players may go into later in life.”

Local Windsor Athletes were in Port Huron last night fighting for at the Battle at the Border 11 promoted by Xtreme Caged Combat (XCC). Team Maximum went an impressive 3 wins and 0 losses last night and some new championship hardware was brought back to Windsor.

Thought by many as the underdog coming into this fight Chris "the titan" Highton silenced everyone. With a new regime and standard of work ethic that is expected by the athlete's of Team Maximum this night we were treated to the best Highton anyone has ever seen before. Highton squared off against a tough fighter from Sarnia fighting in his own backyard, Chris "Canadian Bacon" Logan. Highton shocked the entire crowd by winning by a TKO stoppage in the 1st round and looked to control this match from the start of the bell to become the new XCC welterweight (170lbs) champion.

Randa Markos, is fresh off her Canadian Championship at Grapplers Quest a couple of weeks ago. Markos continued to grow in the sport showing great composure vs. national level amateur boxer Bernice Booth (Niagara Falls) before finally closing the distance and taking her down and finishing the fight by a TKO in first round and is set up to contend for the XCC title on her upcoming fight for this organization.

Windsor gets “Energized” with MMA Fighter Chucky Mady

A local Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) success story, Chucky Mady brings a significant amount of fighting experience to the table when it comes to performing at MMA competitions he participates in all over the world. His approach to the sport is highly entertaining; he is known for his highlight reel activities in the ring as well. “The Energiza Bunny” is a fan favourite almost everywhere he goes.

Mady is a 3rd degree black belt in Isshinryu Karate with a background in Kickboxing, Judo and Wrestling. He hails from Mady’s Martial Arts gym in Windsor, Ontario where he is instructed by his father, Grandmaster Albert Mady who is also a highly-regarded person in the discipline. According to Mady, “He’s been training me all my life; he taught me about getting mentally ready and to visualize myself winning.” The tale of the tape, Mady is a youthful 22 years of age at 5’7” and weighs in at 135 pounds. He is presently employed at a local beer store and a licensed establishment in Windsor, Ontario.

Mady got “The Energiza Bunny” nickname because he can go the distance in the ring due to his extraordinary level of cardio fitness. He is also extremely quick with a spin hook kick and a flurry of fists as his competitors will tell you.

In November 2008 at Shidokan, Philip Sehenuk of the United States was on the receiving end of one of those kicks, getting knocked out quickly in the third round by a very determined Mady. Like Canadian champion George St. Pierre of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), Mady enjoys having strong Karate skills through his training in Isshinryu and St. Pierre’s discipline Kyokushin.

With a full contact sport like MMA, where cage-fighting happens, Mady doesn’t seem to be too concerned about his safety in the cage. “I go into the ring well-prepared. I’ve been doing it for a long time. We are trained to avoid injury and take safety precautions. I don’t think that MMA is dangerous because we are trained athletes who are conditioned for it,” says Mady. The referees are also prepared to stop a fight if someone is in trouble. Today, in MMA, health and safety is paramount as the fighters are closely observed through EKG’s, blood work and other medical testing.

Back at age 16, Mady started to fight in MMA amateur contests. He has a highly respectable 8-3 record as a junior fighter. As an amateur, Mady fought 3, three minute rounds in every contest but the title fights were 5, three minute rounds in duration.

Mady was very young when he entered the MMA ring but well-prepared because of his previous training. At the time, he brought a lot of experience into the ring including Karate from three years of age and Kickboxing around seven. He also had the wrestling background he needed in order to be an exceptional submission artist in the ring. Mady surprised everyone because he was performing so well as a grappler when his strength was in striking. In most of his amateur bouts, Mady submitted his opponents through utilizing wrestling techniques.

When it was time to sign up, Mady’s father fast-tracked him into MMA by signing a waiver that he was fully prepared to fight at this level even though he was only 16. The minimum age was 18 at the time. The promoter knew he was well trained and capable.

In his first fight, Mady fought a 24 year old man from Detroit. “My first fight was the hardest because I didn’t know what to expect,” remarked Mady. He had just climbed into the ring with a guy who had eight years on him and defeated him by applying a guillotine hold that led to submission. His ring smarts were very apparent at the time even with no previous MMA experience.

As a pro, starting at 19 years of age, Mady has a respectable 3-2 record at this time, all of which were sanctioned fights. He also has a stunning 5-0 record in other professional bouts he participated in. His pro debut was at the “King of the Cage” tournament in Michigan where the promoter requested his attendance. “In the pro ranks, competitors get a “show-up” fee and a win bonus to start while your flight, hotel and meals are paid for too. “In amateur, there’s a lot of politics going on, nothing is paid for and the promoters are hard to deal with,” exclaimed Mady. With different pro organizations and different titles to win, as a professional, Mady will move towards the UFC by winning some of the pro tournaments like the “King of the Cage” competitions.

A fight worth remembering in December of 2009, Mady was honoured to fight in the first ever MMA event to be held in the Middle East. He went up against an excellent fighter, Kiko Lopez (3-1) out of California having previously studied his fight videos, looking for weaknesses. “It was supposed to be my toughest fight,” said Mady. He managed to knock out Kiko just seconds into the first round with a punishing knee to the face that left him confused and bewildered. Mady has a history of delivering first round knockouts like the match where he sent a kick to his opponent’s face just 3 seconds into the fight, knocking him out instantly.

Regarding MMA, the sport is actually a wide variety of fighting disciplines including karate, boxing, judo, kickboxing and wrestling. striking (stand-up) and grappling (ground) are the activities that take place in an MMA ring. Mady is better at striking but has won several contests through (ground) submission as well.

More people are accepting this as a legitimate sport at this time because safety measures have been implemented, steadily improving the reputation of the sport. Fights are called off if a competitor can’t defend himself, is knocked out or submitted on the ground. Mady comments, “I’m not sure why some people would enter the cage if they’re not ready. The coaches need to be certain that a fighter is prepared.” MMA is set to be regulated in Ontario starting in 2011.

MMA draws a huge crowd when it comes to regular TV and pay-per-view programming. MMA also fills up a lot of seats in casinos and arenas throughout North America. The popularity of the sport is soaring in Canada and the U.S. where many race to their televisions to watch MMA contests including the popular UFC programming.

Mady is open to the possibility of fighting in the UFC but he would need to push his weight to 155 lbs. (from 135) in order to qualify for the UFC’s starting weight class. Also, “Negotiating a contract with the UFC is a little tricky because you may sign on for so much money but you don’t know when those fights will take place,” says Mady. According to him, it would be somewhat difficult to deal with your commitments or plan ahead when things are like that. For now, Mady was just informed that he can fight with another professional MMA organization called “Strikeforce” which happens to be one of the top three outfits under the wing of MMA, just below the UFC in the hierarchy.

The UFC spectacle has helped the sport became more recognized and accepted in the last few years but fighters like Mady also bring the goods home with an incredible 196 bouts under his belt involving Kickboxing, Karate and MMA efforts. If you were to watch his fights on U Tube (Search: Chuck “The Energiza Bunny” Mady) or pay-per-view/TV, you will understand why he is so highly-regarded in MMA circles and with his legion of fans. That kind of experience commands the respect of all of the competitors he faces. Mady would be very interested in pursuing an opportunity with the UFC if it presents itself.

In Ontario, it is now legal for MMA events to happen at facilities in places like Windsor including the WFCU and of course, the casino. According to Mady, ”The market for MMA in this area is better than Toronto or Ottawa with Detroit being across the river.” Without a doubt, Mady would be a good ambassador for the sport here. He is the most successful MMA fighter to come out of this Windsor.

On November 27, 2010, Mady will participate in a demanding event named “Shidokan” at Chicago, Illinois. In a certain spectacle, Mady will get into a match against an old foe in Philip Sehenuk, hailing from Atlanta, Georgia. This is a rubber match between the two where Mady had previously knocked the competitor out in 2008 with a stunning and surprising head kick (see on U Tube). Highlight reel for sure. This would give both fighters the opportunity to show how versatile they are and prepared to compete in future contests involving Karate, Kickboxing and MMA. This is a triathlon match including 3 rounds that are 3 minutes in duration.

It takes a significant amount of experience in Karate, Kickboxing and MMA style fighting to pull this off. Mady is fluent in all of these disciplines starting with a whopping 15+ years of experience in Isshinryu Karate. He has been trained by his father who possesses a 9th degree black belt and runs his own gym in Windsor, Ontario. Mady himself has achieved a 3rd degree black belt in the discipline.

The MMA component of this fight is Round 3 where the fight becomes wide open. The 5 oz. finger gloves go on and shots to the head are OK. Knees or kicks to the head or groin are strictly prohibited but kicking everywhere else is alright. Additionally, Round 3 is a “submission” round if the fight goes to the ground. Mady has defeated several opponents in the past through using wrestling techniques as well as karate and kickboxing.

The entertainment value of such a venue is worth the trip to Chicago alone. To see such a widespread example of fighting disciplines in one tournament is extremely exciting, especially when a winning local fighter participates. “The Energiza Bunny” will be found in the Windy City at “Shidokan” on November 27, 2010 at the Hyatt Regency Chicago in the Crystal Ballroom.

Halloween Havoc Presented by Full Contact Fight League brought together another great card Saturday October 30th in Port Huron at the Mc Morran Arena where we saw a night filled with great fights and with slick submissions and awesome KO's.

In the Featherweight (135lb) Title Match Colin "The Submission Magician" Meloche from Madys Karate in Windsor fought a very well decorated wrestler Clint Kingsbury of Adrenaline Training Centre in London . The fight went to ground rather quick with Meloche securing a triangle choke that with a little bit of positioning was able to lock it in tight and got the submission at 1:20 in the first round.

Also fighting from Mady's Karate was Theo "The Poetic Hitman" Toney vs Jason Pomeroy (Team Pummel - Flint MI)

The fight starts off fast with both fighters throwing a lot of punches and kicks. Toney controls Pomeroy against the cage and Toney lands a couple of uppercuts which stops Pomeroy at 1:07 in the first round by KO.

The Western Fairgrounds played host to the Grappler Quest 2010 Canadian National Grappling Championships in London, Ontario, Canada October 30th where we saw members of Maximum Fitness Centre competing to become a Canadian Champion in what is quickly becoming one of most premier Grappling events in the North America.

Windsor Boy Leaves for Tokyo to Pursue K1 Dream

Local Windsor boy has made it to the big time. Jan Kaszuba (Mady's Karate, MFC Windsor) left for Tokyo Japan to pursue his dream to become a K1 Fighter three years ago. He has now landed on the biggest stage so far in his fight career. He is fighting next month at the K-1 Max 70KG Finals in a opening fight against a very tough Kyokushin / MMA fighter named Fabiano Da Silva. Jan's coach in Japan is non other the K1 Japan Champion Nicholas Pettas. Keep your eye out for this event November 8th. Not many Canadian fighters can say they have fought in the K1 but Jan Kaszuba is now one of them.

Congrats to Jan for all the hard work and perseverance to keep the dream alive. Now go get em.

Windsor Minor Football Referee Passes away - Fundraiser Help Needed

This past Tuesday Mel Woods passed away while playing basketball with a number of his friends. Mel was a referee for Windsor Minor Football this year. He had a wife and three girls.

This Sunday before each game there will be a moment of silence in honour of Mel. Also all proceeds from 50/50 will be donated to his family.

On November 21, 2010 the Windsor Valiants will also be holding a pasta dinner/silent auction/raffle to assist in the cost of the funeral. The Moose Lodge has donated their building, staff etc. They also need items for the pasta dinner.

Items needed: penne, sauce, butter, buns, medium ground beef and bag salad. Any door prizes would be welcome as well.

The fights are done and the fighters are back on Canadian Soil. Josh Taveirne from Windsor's Maximum Fitness Centre won his pro debut fight in front of the some 3000 Military Troops from various parts of the world including Canada, United States, Britian. The fights were held in front of the Canada house at the Kandahar Air Field. Congratulations to all the fighters who made the sacrafice to fight in such such a place. London Ontario also sent two fighters Jess Gross and Alex Gasson from MFC's Affilated Club Adrenaline Training Center.

Taveirne is accopmanied by other Affiliate fighters Alex Gasson and Jesse Gross of Adrenaline Traing Centre in London. Brent Franczuz was also to take part but because of contractual obligations of the fight this weekend had to pass on this event, butwas greatful to be considered from the start."

Windsor Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Academy Wins in Michigan

Windsor Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Academy participated in a tournament held in Walled Lake Michigan named the Michigan Open. The tournament was strictly Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and was attended by over 100 children competitors, between the ages of 6 years old to 15 years old.

There were also several Teen and Adult divisions.

The event drew a large spectator audience of over 200 who were entertained by a diverse group of practitioners from Ohio, Michigan and of course, Ontario.

The audience and spectators were treated to bouts between black belts and brown belts as a treat that showed dedication to the art.\r\n\r\nThe following are a list of the Windsor Brazilian Jiu Jitsu participants and there placement at the tournament.

Windsor Team Wins in Ontario Special Olympics Soccer

VAUGHAN, ON – The Special Olympics division of the Ontario Cup kicked-off Sunday (September 19) morning with a two-game series between the Windsor Caboto Specials and the Brampton Panthers.

In the first game, the Windsor Caboto Specials came out strong and managed to slip 5 goals past the Brampton keeper.

Windsor’s goals were scored by John Theoret, Mitchell Farnham (friend of In Play!), Steven Kwasnycia and Jeff Badgley who netted two.

Brampton was able to find the back of the net to notch one on the scoreboard. Alex Lue-Shins is creditted with the goal.

In the second game, the Specials repeated their strong performance, defeating the Brampton Panthers by a score of 6-1.

The Specials’ goals were scored by Jeff Badgley, Hank Cook, John Theoret, Mitchell Farnam, James Boyce and Steven Kwasnycia.

The lone Panthers marker was scored by George Ricardo.

Consistent with the spirit of sportsmanship displayed by both sides in Sunday’s games, the Windsor Caboto Specials (blue kit) insisted on the Panthers (maroon kit) joining them for the official team photo.

Windsor Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Earns 23 Medals at Cobo Tourney

Windsor Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Academy participated in a tournament held in Detroit Michigan's Cobo Hall for the Great Lakes Grappling Championship. The tournament brought several styles; jiu jitsu- Brazilian and Japanese, wrestling and judo to the front. The Windsor Brazilian Jiu Jitsu team members received awards for the Largest Youth Team and Most Supportive Team.

The Windsor Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Competition Team returned to Canada and declared 23 medals in all with 9 Gold, 9 silver and 5 bronze.

This tournament was followed up by the Annual Team Canada vs Team USA, where participants from the tournament may compete to represent their country. As both side were limited due to time constraints, Team Canada was once again victorious winning the coveted Cup for the event – with Team Canada winning 7 to 5 against Team USA. It was a well deserved match and entertaining as well. As always; the hard work showed through.

The annual fundraising gala hosted by Mary Carillo will take place at New York City’s famed Waldorf=Astoria Hotel.

An impressive list of elite athletes from 20 different sports is vying for the evening’s top honors – Sportswoman of the Year – Individual and Team awards.

FIREFEST Extinguished For 2010

The TOUGHEST 2 MINUTES IN SPORT became a little tougher this weekend. FIREFEST battled extreme heat and rain during a one of kind event down at Windsor’s Riverfront Festival Plaza.

34 corporate teams stumbled and fumbled through the Corporate Combat Relays on Friday night - double the amount of teams in 2009. Collectively, the teams raised $16,500 for Transition to Betterness. This was the 9th year for FIREFEST, which has raised over $65,000 for local Windsor-Essex charities.

On Saturday, 134 firefighters (men and women) from across USA and Canada – including Windsor and Tecumseh competed in the FIREFIT Championships Regional Challenge. The firefighter combat challenge is “The Toughest 2 Minutes in Sports !” Firefighters took on the challenging course in heavy rain conditions. Lancer Football unveils Gino Fracas Memorial Golf Tournament August 23, 2010

Golf outing set for Monday, August 23 at Essex Country Club

The Lancer Football program at the University of Windsor is pleased to announce the unveiling of the first annual Gino Fracas Memorial Golf Tournament, scheduled for this August.

Formerly known as the Touchdown Club’s Lancer Football Golf Classic, this year’s tournament is set for Monday, August 23rd at the renowned Essex Golf & Country Club in LaSalle, Ontario.

The newly renamed golf outing will be dedicated to honour the legacy of legendary Lancer Football head coach Gino Fracas, who passed away last fall.

“It is a fitting tribute that our annual Lancer Football Golf outing will now be named in Coach Fracas’ honour,” commented Head Coach Mike Morencie. “Gino meant so much to our program and to our players and alumni and this will be another opportunity for us to recognize his many contributions to Lancer Football.”

All of the proceeds generated from this golf outing go directly back to support the Lancer Football Program. The event is a great opportunity for alumni, friends and family to get together each summer for a fun day of golf and fun.

Windsor Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Academy Wins 16 Medals in Ohio

Windsor Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Academy participated in a tournament held in Toledo Ohio called the Buckeye Border International Grappling Championship. The tournament brought several styles; jiu jitsu, wrestling and judo to the front. This tournament also drew a larger mix of competitors from all across Michigan, Ohio, Windsor Ontario. It was reported that there were other countries present and represented. It was also a televised event in Ohio. The Windsor Brazilian Jiu Jitsu team members received the award the Largest Youth Team.

The Windsor Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Competition Team returned to Canada with 16 medals in all with 6 Gold. There were new competitors present making for more and added challenges. New divisions were introduced and added to the challenge for all competitors; some involved a larger spread for their age and weight classes.

The team showed great spirit and determination in traveling to Toledo Ohio and meeting new competitors. The students and spectators were treated to a show featuring Brazilian Jiu Jitsu black belts, one being Brock Lesnar's Brazilian Jiu jitsu instructor Rodrigo Comprido. All belt belt instructors put on an excellent display of techniques for those in attendance.

2010 Windsor’s Team Parker Construction 2 time World Champions and 5 time Canadian Champions

Windsor’s Team Parker Construction is competing in the Firefighter Combat Challenge for its 14th year. During this time, the team has donated their season winnings to Windsor Fire & Rescue Services - equalling over $130,000 worth of fire equipment. Windsor is a threat to challenge for another Canadian and World championship in 2010.

The popularity of this unique sport continues to grow. January 2010, Windsor team member Darren Hillman participated in the first FIREFIT Dubai, United Arab Emirates Event. FIREFIT brought a team of Canada’s best competitors with a range of expertise in coaching, hosting and training firefighters for the competition. The first UAE International FIREFIT Championship was held in conjunction with the prestigious 2010 Intersec Convention held yearly in Dubai.

Darren Hillman - a seventeen year veteran and a qualified Captain, Darren enters his 12th year on the Combat Challenge course. Darren is the current over 40 Men’s Individual and Over 40 Men’s Tandem World Champion. He holds eight World Titles since joining the team in 1998 and once held the World Record in the Open Men’s Individual category. His goal is to retain his current titles and to help his teammates win their third World Championship in the Team category.

Jack Bailey - began his Combat Challenge career back in 1997 and quickly established himself as one of the sport’s elite. He held the Men’s Individual World Record from 2002 until it was broken in 2008, holds several National Individual Championships and was instrumental in Windsor’s Team success with six World Championships to his credit. He is excited to be back after a three year break and is once again ready to help Team Parker compete for top spot at World Challenge XIX.

Rob Fawcett - has been competing since 1999 and was part of the powerhouse Windsor Team from 2001 through 2006. Rob has five World Championships to his name and was a key member of the Windsor Relay team's success. Rob has a Top Five Individual finish at Worlds and brings experience and a competitive edge to this year’s Team Parker Construction. He is back for one reason, and that’s to help his team win!

Laureano Cordeiro - is in his seventh year of competing and is excited to be back with Windsor’s Team Parker Construction. He brings tremendous speed and strength to the team making him an important part of both the Team and Relay competitions. His goal is to hoist the World Championship trophy this November in Myrtle Beach.

Locky Gelinas - has been competing since 2006 and has become one of the sports strongest competitors. His goals for this season are to be competitive for the top spot on Windsor Team Parker Construction and to win his first Team Championship at World Challenge XIX in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Locky went back to basics in the off season and has come back in the best shape of his career and is ready to win.

P.D. Pinsonneault - is the team's newest member with 3 years of fire fighting experience. Firefest 2010 will mark his first Firefit competition and he is very excited to be part of the team. P.D. has set a goal of 1:40 for himself and with his strong work ethic he hopes to carry on Windsor's winning tradition. He will be attending his first National competition in September in Brampton, Ontario and then on to World Challenge XIX in November in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

ABOUT THE CHALLENGE:
The Toughest 2 Minutes in Sports ! As seen on TSN, ESPN2 & Versus, the Firefighter Combat Challenge was developed to showcase physical fitness and is about people doing their job safer and better. 3 to 5 person teams compete individually against the clock wearing full firefighting gear. The Challenge tasks are timed and completed sequentially.

In Canada, FIREFIT Championships has specialized in presenting firefighter events, across Canada since 1994. The competition has grown over the years and the tour has visited every province in Canada – with 12 events scheduled this year. Competitors come from every Province and Territory as well as the United States, New Zealand, England and Dubai. A 1 hour Canadian Championship show is aired on TSN, OLN & RDS. In 2010, the Canadian Championships will be held in Brampton, Ontario.

In USA, Scott Firefighter Combat Challenge® began in 1991. In early spring, the Challenge attracts hundreds of U.S. and Canadian municipal fire departments to over 25 events and has expanded to New Zealand, Germany, Argentina, Chile, and South Africa. At the USA regional level, competitors must complete the competition course within a certain time limit in order to qualify for the world championships. In 2010, the World Championships will be held in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

Windsor’s “Team Parker Construction” will be featured during FIREFEST at Windsor’s Riverfront Festival Plaza August 20 & 21. FIREFEST is the hottest 2 day, family event of the summer ! The event will bring large groups of firefighters, family & friends to Windsor for this South Western Ontario regional stop. Firefighters from across Canada and the USA will compete.

The festival will feature Corporate and Media Combat Relay Teams stumbling through the course on Friday night while the professionals tear up the course on Saturday. The KID ZONE will provide entertainment for the little ones. Proceeds benefit Transition to Betterness. This is the 9th year for FIREFEST which has raised over $50,000 for local charities.

Lancers and Spitfires to host Czech Republic World Junior U20 Team

The University of Windsor Lancers and the Windsor Spitfires are pleased to announce they’ll be hosting the 2011 Czech Republic World Junior U20 team in a series of games from September 8-11, 2010.

On Wednesday September 8, 2010, the Lancers will kick off the four-game series against the Czech Republic at Essex Arena & Sports Complex at 7:30pm. The game will be presented by title sponsor Countryside Chrysler.

The Windsor Spitfires will then continue their 2010-11 exhibition schedule as they host the Czech Republic the following night on Thursday, September 9th at 7:05pm at the WFCU Centre.

The Czech team will wrap the Essex County portion of their trip on Friday evening as the Lancers will play their second game of the series on September 10th at 7:30pm here at the Vollmer Recreation Complex in LaSalle.

The series will wrap up the next evening in London, as the Czech will travel up the 401 on Saturday, September 11th to face-off against the Western Mustangs in London.

Lancer head coach Kevin Hamlin said his team was looking for a unique pre-season opportunity and noticed a number of World Junior teams playing in North America in preparation for the World Junior Tournament in Buffalo, New York in December.

“This is a really unique opportunity for the Lancers and Spitfires to host a world class U20 junior team here in Windsor,” commented Coach Hamlin. “We think the community is going to enjoy the chance to see these exciting games in early September.”

Hamlin contacted the Czech Republic Ice Hockey Federation, who put him in touch with U20 head coach Slava Lener. “We thought it would be a great fit to get them here in Windsor in the pre-season and to help assist them in their preparation for the world tournament.”

In addition to adding the Western Mustangs to the schedule, Hamlin rounded out the series by contacting Windsor Spitfires Vice-President and General Manager Warren Rychel, who jumped at the opportunity to play such a high calibre team.

“The Windsor Spitfires are proud to be part of this great event, as we welcome the Czech national junior team to Windsor,” said Rychel. “Playing the Czechs will be a great challenge for our team as we prepare for the upcoming season, and we look forward to hosting another exciting event at the WFCU Centre.”

“I’m sure the community will be out in full force for these games and our team is excited to be part of this newly created series,” Rychel continued.

Coach Hamlin feels this will be a great experience to help bring his Lancer team together and kick-off a new season. “I am looking forward to the upcoming season, and the Czech’s visit is the beginning of what I feel is going to an outstanding year for our hockey club,” added Hamlin. “We look forward to hosting the U20 team, and the competition is something our guys will remember for the rest of their lives.”

The Windsor Minor Hockey Association will be celebrating our 50th Anniversary this August 21st 2010

WMHA is in the process of gathering sponsors for their upcoming gala which boosts 700 guests. Sponsors are recognized in a program that is handed out to each guest.

It may seem like a long ways away but an event like this takes time to put together and the organization needs to know how much money they will have in their budget to plan the event.

They have sponsorships available for as low as $150, this is a great way to get your company name out there and help some youngsters play hockey here in Windsor at the same time.

Keep young athletes hydrated to ward off heat illness

Recent heat wave prompts calls for regular water consumption during vigorous outdoor activities

Rosemont, Ill. (July 28, 2010) – As America’s young people gear up for organized football, soccer and baseball practices this July and August, record high temperature forecasts have prompted medical experts to call for drinking water: more, early and often.

“To stay active and healthy, young athletes need plenty of the right kinds of fluids,” said Marjorie J. Albohm, MS, ATC, a member of the STOP Sports Injuries campaign and president of the National Athletic Trainer’s Association. “Staying hydrated is extremely important because water is what delivers oxygen to the muscles, providing fuel for grueling summer workouts.”

The STOP Sports Injuries campaign (www.STOPSportsInjuries.org)—launched this spring by the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM) and a coalition of other health-related organizations—aims to arm the public with information and tools to prevent, recognize and treat the long-term consequences of sports overuse and trauma injuries to children.

“Whenever young people are outside playing or practicing in the heat, they need lots of fluids to replace what their bodies are losing through sweating,” said leading heat illness researcher and professor of kinesiology at the University of Connecticut, Doug Casa, PhD, ATC, FNATA, FACSM. “If the body isn’t replenished, dehydration can occur and increase the risk of a serious heat illness like heat stroke.”

Casa, Albohm and other sports experts warn coaches, trainers, parents and athletes to diligently monitor their conditions, being especially mindful of the symptoms of heat illness:

• Chills
• Dark-colored urine
• Dizziness
• Dry mouth
• Headaches
• Muscle cramps
• Thirst
• Weakness.

Those young people just beginning summer practices for organized sports—like football, baseball and soccer—are particularly vulnerable to suffering some form of heat illness.

Casa recommends that young people drink at least eight ounces of fluids—such as water, juice, or sports drinks like Gatorade—before beginning outdoor activities, and up to five ounces more every 20 minutes during the activity. Students of the Windsor Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Academy participated in a tournament hosted by the Elite Federation of Grapplers, a NAGA (North American Grappling Association) sanctioned event. This tournament saw the addition of several new participants from other schools and was a success for all involved.

The event took place at the Roseville Recreation Centre in Roseville Michigan. As with all of these well run tournaments, participants were matched according to weight, age and experience levels. Participating schools came from all across Michigan, Ohio and Windsor Ontario.

The Windsor Brazilian Jiu Jitsu /Jean Jacques Machado Competition team members received 2 separate awards: The Most Supportive School and The Largest Youth Team. The team has received these awards 6 times in the last couple of years.

The Windsor Brazilian Jiu Jitsu/Jean Jacques Machado Competition Team returned to Canada with 18 medals in all; 10 Gold medals, 5 Silver and 3 Bronze. There were new competitors present making for more and added challenges. Each team member received a placing medal for their efforts.

Furry Friends Coming to Windsor!

(Windsor, ON) – The SuperDogs make their debut in Windsor on Saturday May 15th at 3:00pm – and several SuperDog performers will be making a few special advance appearances across the city in anticipation of the big event!

The SuperDogs will be making two public appearances Tuesday May 4th, including:

Windsor Mayor Eddie Francis Announces Exciting Memorial Cup Bid Initiative

(Windsor) Earlier today from the Mayor’s Office, Windsor Mayor Eddie Francis announced that the City of Windsor will be leading a project to have fans from the local area autograph a Memorial Cup Bid Banner Jersey in support of the Windsor Spitfires 2011 MasterCard Memorial Cup Bid. The banner will be available for fans to sign starting on Monday April 5th at the WFCU Centre, at the Windsor Spitfires’ 7:05 pm playoff home game versus the Plymouth Whalers.

“When we make our presentation to the Canadian Hockey League on April 14th, we want to show them that the entire community is behind this bid,” said Mayor Eddie Francis.” “ We have a winning facility, a winning team, and a great city, and I encourage everyone to sign this jersey to show their support and demonstrate to the selection committee that Windsor is the obvious choice to host the MasterCard Memorial Cup in 2011,” added Mayor Francis.

Selected schools from the Windsor-Essex Catholic School Board and the Greater Essex County District School Board will also participate in the project. The project will be conducted over a four-day span, starting on Tuesday, April 6th until Friday, April 9th. Banner Sign Company, a Canadian owned company will be producing the banner jersey to assist with this initiative.

The City of Windsor encourages residents within the Windsor and Essex County area attending the Spitfires game on April 5th in supporting this initiative to further the City of Windsor’s efforts in securing the 2011 MasterCard Memorial Cup.

ICHA SPECIAL NEEDS KIDS Fishing Derby June 13/10 at Assumption Park - Windsor

The Italian Canadian HandiCapable Association (ICHA) is an organization that works closely with both physically and mentally challenged children and adults in our community.

They are pleased to announce that they are again planning to host the 8th Annual Fishing Derby which offers these wonderfully gifted people the opportunity to go fishing. The event will be supervised by local pro-fisherman in a controlled atmosphere to ensure maximum safety and fun.

The ICHA Fishing Derby will be a live release program, supported by the MNR (Ministry of Natural Resources), OFHA (Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters), The Canadian Coast Guard, Outdoor Company and Local Bait & Tackle Shops.

Also two celebrities attending the event this year are, Italo Labignan, host of the Canadian SportFishing show, and his camera crew to shoot clips of the event to be aired on TSN this coming season, and Clay Dyer. Clay Dyer was born on May 23, 1978, without legs, no arm on the left side and only a partial arm on the right. A professional angler since 1995, Clay has fished in more then 200 Bass Tournaments and placed first in 20 state bass tournaments.

A picnic is planned with entertainment provided by Music Express, Canada’s premier show-band, and prizes will be given out to all participants. Anything that you and your company could contribute to the ICHA Fishing Derby on June 13/10 would be greatly appreciated.

The Windsor Minor Hockey Association Celebrates 50 Years.

The Windsor Minor Hockey Association will be celebrating our 50th Anniversary this August 21st 2010

WMHA is in the process of gathering sponsors for their upcoming gala which boosts 700 guests. Sponsors are recognized in a program that is handed out to each guest.

It may seem like a long ways away but an event like this takes time to put together and the organization needs to know how much money they will have in their budget to plan the event.

They have sponsorships available for as low as $150, this is a great way to get your company name out there and help some youngsters play hockey here in Windsor at the same time.

Please give whatever you can for a great cause and show the community you care about the kids and want to help keep them on the ice and out of trouble.

Windsor Midget Minor Tier One Wins Bob Black Memorial Tournament in Oshawa

Congratulations to the Midget Minor Tier One team, sponsored by Mike Tower Construction in winning the Bob Black Memorial Tournament in Oshawa this past weekend. The team went undefeated in the Tournament and beat Oakville 3-1 in the Championship game. Ryan Nicodemo was named the Tournament MVP. Congratulations to Head Coach Dave Drouillard, his staff and all the players!!

Saturday February 13 the Leamington Police played the NHL Old-timers in a benefit game for the WE Care For Kids Foundation.

It was a packed house and a great time. Special thanks to Constable Kevin O'Neil of the Leamington PD for organizing the event.

After the game everyone headed to the Roma Club for some great food, presentations and autograph sessions.

If It Bleeds, It Leads - TV Going Too Far!

I've had enough of TV and the levels at which they are stooping to garner ratings!

I will not use the Olympian's name (you know who he is by now), but I have to get this off my chest because this is the second time in the last three weeks I have witnessed a human being die on the news and today's Olympic tragedy makes me sick to my stomach!

Reporting this man's death is news albeit tragic, but still news, I will grant the TV stations that, but televising a person die on TV is not news, it's GOON TV!

I originally witnessed this on NBC and thought to myself, surly Canadian TV has more class then to show this...but nope, I was wrong, there it was on CTV.

And if showing the man die is not bad enough, they have to show it over, and over and over again. Plus we need to see it in slow motion and from three different angles too.

I am embarrassed for you CTV and your complete lack of common sense.

This poor guy has a family, a mother, a father somewhere watching this. How would you feel if this happened to your family Mr.Cameraman?

Has TV sunk so low that TV exec's feel they have to get this tragedy on the air before the next station? Or are we the public viewing audience asking for this type of coverage?

If it's the latter than let's get the TV cameras on Death Row and set up Pay-Per-View events on HBO!

The cameraman is not the only idiot responsible, the Producers and/or Editors are the one that give the thumbs up to go to air; so it's a comedy of errors and poor judgment.

I can understand things are going to happen on "Live" TV but there's no reason to re-broadcast this.

I know some people may say just, "Turn the station." True, I could do that, but that's not my point, a human being's last moments has no place on TV period. If you need to see this type of exposure than you should go rent Faces of Death!

The first person I witnessed die on TV three weeks ago was the Haitian man shot to death by the police as he picked up a bag of rice that fell from a passing truck. The CNN cameraman could not get in this man's face fast enough. Just inches from his face as he lay dying in the middle of the street, his life draining out of the holes plugged in him. The CNN group of turds stole this man's last ounce of dignity as he died...Disgusting!

I take pictures myself and I have been in a situation where I had to question what I was about to do.

It was nothing compared to a man dying, I was shooting a Lions game at Ford Field and a player was seriously injured right in front of me, (I was on the sidelines) but I chose to put the camera down. I don't know if it was right or wrong, but I sure didn't feel like a scumbag afterwards!

I also ask people before I take their picture, I have ran into many of celebrities and I always ask for the shot. If they say "No" I don't take it.

God forbid Mr. TV Producer one of these days it's your relative gasping for breath as they're dying in a car wreck; "BROUGHT TO YOU LIVE!"

So I ask you again. What if that was your 21 year old son Mr. TV Executive? How would you like to watch that?

In Play! Spitfires writer Chris Lucas was on hand at today's press conference at the WFCU Centre to announce another big event coming to Windsor.

(WINDSOR) The world’s best curlers are coming to Windsor! The Capital One Grand Slam of Curling, the World Curling Tour, iSport Media and Management, and the City of Windsor announced today that Windsor, Ont. has been awarded the hosting rights to the 2010 Grey Power World Cup of Curling. The opening leg of the men’s 2010-11 Capital One Grand Slam of Curling series, the Grey Power World Cup of Curling is scheduled to take place at the WFCU Centre in Windsor, Ont. from November 3-7, 2010.

“We’re thrilled to award Windsor the hosting rights to the 2010 Grey Power World Cup of Curling,” said Wendy Kane, Executive Director for the Capital One Grand Slam of Curling series. “The WFCU Centre is a first class facility and we’re looking forward to showcasing the world’s top curlers to the city in November.”

An elite 18-team event consisting of the world’s top ranked curling foursomes, the field for the Grey Power World Cup of Curling is expected to include a wealth of Olympic and World Championship medallists including Kevin Martin (Edmonton, Alta.), Glenn Howard (Coldwater, Ont.), David Murdoch (Lockerbie, Scotland), Brad Gushue (St. John’s, Nfld.), Randy Ferbey (Edmonton, Alta.), Thomas Ulsrud (Oslo, Norway), Wayne Middaugh (Etobicoke, Ont.), Jeff Stoughton (Winnipeg, Man.) and Kerry Burtnyk (Winnipeg, Man.).

The event features a total purse of $100,000 (CDN).

The Grey Power World Cup of Curling will mark the first time the City of Windsor has played host to a Capital One Grand Slam of Curling event.

“Windsor is fast becoming recognized as the city of choice to hold large-scale, national and international events, and we are pleased that our city has been awarded the hosting rights for the prestigious 2010 Grey Power World Cup of Curling,” said Mayor Eddie Francis. “Windsor and our world-class facility, the WFCU Centre, will share the spotlight as curling fans tune in to watch the world’s top ranking curling teams this November.”

The 2010 Grey Power World Cup of Curling will mark the 10th edition of the event, which was originally known as the Masters of Curling from 2001-02 to 2008-09. Howard, who won a gold medal for Canada at the 2007 World Championships, has won the event in each of the past four years including this season’s tournament which was contested at the Hershey Centre in Mississauga, Ont.

Following the Grey Power World Cup of Curling, the 2010-11 Capital One Grand Slam of Curling series will continue with The National, scheduled from December 15-19, 2010 at the Wesbilt Centre in Vernon, B.C. The dates and location of the series’ third leg, the BDO Classic Canadian Open has yet to be announced. The 2010-2011 Capital One Grand Slam of Curling series concludes with the Grey Power Players’ Championship, a joint men’s and women’s event, scheduled for April 12-17, 2011 at the Crystal Centre in Grande Prairie, Alta.

As part of its exclusive agreement, CBC will air live playoff coverage of the first three men’s 2010-11 Capital One Grand Slam of Curling events. CBC will also broadcast the men’s and women’s finals of the 2011 Grey Power Players’ Championship.

Held annually since 2001-02, the Capital One Grand Slam of Curling features the world’s best players in one series.

Lucas spoke to Mayor Francis after the annoucement and he tells In Play! Magazine how this is another big event for the Windsor community. “To host this national event, is really something special.”

Red Bull Air Race returns to Windsor, Canada in 2010

The Red Bull Air Race World Championship will return to Windsor, Ontario in 2010 after the Canadian city hosted one of the most exciting races in the sport’s history last year. 15 of the world’s best race pilots will be battling it out on 5-6 June at the 4th stop in the 9-race championship. A 2-year agreement means that Windsor will also be a fixture in the 2011 season.

“We’re really excited to be returning to Windsor, Ontario and continuing the partnership for the next two years,” said Red Bull Air Race CEO Bernd Loidl, “It’s a great venue in an exciting city and last year’s race there was a huge success. The enthusiasm for the Red Bull Air Race in Windsor is just tremendous. It feels like all of Canada is behind the race.”

The 2009 Windsor race also gave an important boost to the economy of Ontario, Canada’s most populous province. Ontario’s Minister of Finance, Dwight Duncan emphasized the economic activity generated by the race and highlighted that it gave the entire region a “psychological lift.”

“Last year’s event was not just an economic shot in the arm for Windsor. The excitement of the race was plainly seen not only by the people of Windsor but also the hundreds of thousands of viewers from around the world who tuned in to watch the race,” said Duncan. “Our government is pleased to work with Red Bull Air Race and the City in order to bring the race back to Windsor.”

“This is a great coup for our city. Windsor will be joining a select group of major international cities to host the Red Bull Air Race again in 2010,” added Ontario’s Minister of Economic Development and Trade, Sandra Pupatello. “We look forward to welcoming this unique event and the economic boost it will provide to our region.”

Canadian pilot Pete McLeod said he is delighted the race will be back in his home country. “Of all the locations on the 2010 calendar, I’m most excited to be back racing in Windsor,” he said. “The support I had from my fans, sponsors and the entire city last year was outstanding and resulted in my best finish of the season. We’ve been working hard in the off-season to be more competitive and I hope I can represent Canada strongly again on home soil this summer.”

Defending champion Paul Bonhomme of Britain began his comeback in Windsor in 2009, scoring the first of three victories on the challenging track over the Detroit River in front of over 200,000 cheering fans in the high-speed, low-altitude race through 20-metre high Air Gates.

“Windsor 2009 will go down in my memory bank as a favourite,” said Bonhomme, adding he had never been made to feel more welcome anywhere in the world. “There were warm and hospitable people, a challenging track to test man and machine, and a charming village feel to a great city. If we have half as much fun as we had in 2009, then this year’s race will be superb.”

CHL Announces Events and Participants for the 2010 Home Hardware CHL/NHL Top Prospects Skills Competition

Windsor, ON – The Canadian Hockey League today announced the events and the participants from Team Cherry and Team Orr that will compete in the 2010 Home Hardware CHL/NHL Top Prospects Skills Competition on Tuesday night January 19, 2010, at 7:00 pm at the WFCU Centre in Windsor, ON.

40 of the CHL’s top prospects eligible for the 2010 NHL Entry Draft have been divided amongst four different events and all players competing in a 3-on-3 game to showcase their abilities before fans and a record number of scouts and NHL personnel in attendance. The skills events will include the Fastest Skater, Hardest Shot, Shooting Accuracy, and a brand new Showdown style Breakaway Contest.

The Showdown Breakaway Contest will feature six players per team taking two attempts on goal before a panel of four celebrity judges that will score each attempt based on creativity, originality, degree of difficulty, execution, showmanship, and the ability to score. Celebrity judges include Spitfires’ Vice-President and General Manager Warren Rychel and defenceman Ryan Ellis. Joining them will be former NHL enforcer and Windsor native Bob Probert, along with Rob Faulds from Rogers Sportsnet.

Headlining this new event will be Ryan Spooner and Austin Watson of the Peterborough Petes representing Team Cherry, with Jeff Skinner of the Kitchener Rangers and Tyler Seguin of the Plymouth Whalers representing Team Orr. Spooner is tied for the OHL-lead with four shootout goals this season on six attempts with three game-winners, while Watson is a former member of the Spitfires. Skinner and Seguin are the top two goal scorers in the OHL with 35 and 30 goals respectively.

Spitfires’ forward Taylor Hall and defenceman Cam Fowler will open the event for Team Cherry with the Fastest Skater competition.

The best individual score in each event receives a goal for their team, with another goal awarded for the best team average from each event for a total of eight available goals. The 3-on-3 game consists of two 15-minute periods with running time with all goals scored counting towards the overall competition score.

The Skills Competition will be broadcast live on TVCogeco Windsor beginning at 7:00 pm, with the game to be broadcast to a national audience Wednesday night live on Rogers Sportsnet at 7:00 pm.

Windsor Spitfires and City of Windsor ask Windsor and Essex County Area Residents and Fans to Show Their Support for the Spitfires 2011 MasterCard Memorial Cup Bid

(Windsor) At a press conference conducted earlier today at the Mayor’s Office in downtown Windsor, the Windsor Spitfires and the City of Windsor put a call out to Windsor and Essex County area residents, and fans to show their support for the Spitfires 2011 MasterCard Memorial Cup Bid.

Residents and fans are encouraged to enter their name and bid support comments on the “2011 Support the Bid” link POSTED BELOW. The goal is to have 25,000 names and accompanying support comments by February 1, 2010 supporting the bid to bring this prestigious event to the City of Windsor.

Windsor Mayor Eddie Francis offered the following comment on this new and unique initiative to support the Spitfires bid for the 2011 MasterCard Memorial Cup, “this is a very exciting opportunity and we look forward to supporting the bid as we attempt to secure this memorable and unique championship.”

Windsor Spitfires Governor Peter Dobrich added the following, “through today’s announcement, the Windsor Spitfires and the City of Windsor are looking forward to receiving support for our Memorial Cup Bid from the best city in the Canadian Hockey League here in Windsor and Essex County. We strongly urge the Windsor and Essex County community to rally with us and participate in supporting the bid. We are certain that the great people in our community and the surrounding area will step up to the plate as they always have done in the past for every event or cause that comes to our region. This year’s edition of the MasterCard Memorial Cup will be hosted in Brandon, Manitoba by the Brandon Wheat Kings of the Western Hockey League. The Windsor Spitfires are the reigning and defending 2009 MasterCard Memorial Cup Champions, becoming the first team in the tournament’s history to come back from an 0-2 deficit to win four consecutive games, including a 4-1 victory over the Kelowna Rockets in the Championship Final of the 91st edition of the MasterCard Memorial Cup.

Hall, Ellis Score Goals as Team Canada’s Junior National Team

Defeats Team Sweden 6-2 in 2010 IIHF WJHC Pre-Tournament Game

REGINA, SK – Team Canada took to the ice tonight for the first of its three 2010 IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship Pre-Tournament Games against Team Sweden in Regina, Saskatchewan. Windsor Spitfires forward Taylor Hall opened the game’s scoring for Team Canada 10:48 into the first period to give Canada a 1-0, with Spitfire teammate Greg Nemisz assisting on the goal. Jordan Caron and Brandon Kozun would also score goals for Team Canada in the first period as the host Canadians took a 3-0 lead into the first intermission.

Team Canada would extend its lead to 4-0 on the power play, as Travis Harmonic scored the lone goal of the game’s second period 3:10 into the frame. Canada increased their lead to 5-0 as Windsor Spitfire defenceman Ryan Ellis scored on the power play 3:25 into the third period and Team Canada cruised to a 6-2 victory. Carl Klingberg and Jacob Silfverberg netted goals for Team Sweden later in the third period while Jordan Eberle scored Canada’s sixth and final goal.

Taylor Hall left the game after the first period and did return as he suffered a lower body injury. His injury was not serious in nature and he was held out of the game for precautionary reasons.

Team Canada will play their second pre-tournament game against Team Finland on Tuesday, December 22nd in Calgary, Alberta at 9 pm EST and their third and final game against Team Czechoslovakia the following day at 7 pm EST in Regina, Saskatchewan. Both games will be broadcast live on TSN.

Team Canada will open their 2010 IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship tournament schedule as they take on Team Latvia at 4 pm EST on Saturday, December 26th in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. This game will also be broadcast live on TSN.

CANADIAN JUNIOR TEAM FALLS 4-2 TO CIS ALL STARS IN EXHIBITION PLAY

REGINA - Steven DaSilva scored twice in the third period as the Canadian Interuniversity Sport Saskatchewan All-Stars upset the Canadian junior team 4-2 in exhibition play Tuesday night before 3,329 at Brandt Arena.

Chris Durand had a goal and two assists and Brennan Bosch also scored for the CIS.

Philippe Cornet of Rouyn-Noranda Huskies and defenceman Dylan Olsen of the University of Minnesota-Duluth scored for Canada, who outshot the students 38-23 but were stoned by their own goaltenders, who played for both teams.

After two intrasquad games earlier this week, it was the last chance for the juniors to impress the coaches and management before the 22-man team roster for the world junior championship is announced on Wednesday, but few stood out in this contest.

They rested eight of the 31 players remaining in camp - all of them strong bets to make the squad.

The CIS team was made up of players from the universities of Regina and Saskatchewan, most of them former Western Hockey League players, and gave the juniors a test with their experience and energy.

Also, Team Canada goalies Matt Hackett of the Plymouth Whalers, Olivier Roy of the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles and Martin Jones of the Calgary Hitmen each played two periods one for each team - and took turns frustrating their teammates.

Canada looked to be in control until running into penalty trouble in the third period.

Only seven seconds into a holding call on Cody Eakin of the Swift Current Broncos, DaSilva one-timed a pass from the slot past Roy to put the CIS in the lead at 7:35.

DaSilva got behind the defence and beat Roy with a high shot to seal the victory with 2:34 left to play.

The students scored first, as Durand's shot from the right side of the net slid under Hackett 8:36 into the game. Meanwhile, Roy stoned his teammates in the net, stopping Nazem Kadri of the London Knights on a breakaway in the final minute of the period.

Canada outshot the CIS 14-1 in the second frame, but the students scored on their only shot as Bosch got a return pass from Steve Gillen and banged it past Jones at 6:28.

Canada struck back 44 seconds later as Cornet was at the net to backhand the rebound of a Tyler Cuma shot past Hackett. Olsen tied it at 14:42 when he got a piece of Windsor Spitfire Taylor Hall's pass and it ducked inside Hackett's far post.

The juniors played with desperation but no finish in the third period. There were blazing rushes from Hall and Brandon Kozun of the Hitmen, and Adam Henrique of Windsor got in alone only to shoot over the net.

Defenceman Colten Teubert was the only one of six returning players from last year's world juniors to dress, and he was named captain for the game.

In Play! sat down with now retired NHL enforcer Darren Banks to talk about racism in the NHL, what the league has done to diversify the sport of hockey and his contributions to the game at the minor league level. Banks also talks about the “Hockey in the Hood” program started by Willie O’Ree who was the first black player in the NHL and played his first game in 1958. Banks played 20 games in his NHL from 1992-1994, all with the Boston Bruins. Banks was best known as an enforcer, averaging almost four penalty minutes a game in his career. Banks is originally from Toronto but now resides in Windsor, Ontario.

In Play! – Darren, you played 20 games and had two goals, two assists and 73 penalty minutes. You obviously were an enforcer; did you enjoy your role out on the ice?

Darren Banks – Of course, that was the one way I knew I was going to play in the league was doing that. It took me three years; my first three years were in the minors, when I played in Salt Lake trying to make it up for Calgary. You know different circumstances, I didn’t make it up with Calgary but the following year I made it up with Boston. I knew it was a way for me to play in the league and it’s what I enjoyed to do.

IP – Even today, in the NHL, there are not many black players, and when you played it was even more rare. Did you ever encounter any racism in the NHL or even in the minors?

DM – You know, not any more than a French guy would get teased about being French. It wasn’t really prevalent, and if you’re a smart hockey player you’re not going to antagonize a guy who’s a fighter. If I had been a goal scorer I think it might have been a little different, you’re not going to antagonize a fighter, because he’ll kick your head in. I didn’t run into a lot of it, a little here and there, but the guys who are going to pull that stuff are a bit of an asshole anyway.

WMHA Benefit Event This Saturday.

This Saturday November 28th, between 8a.m. and 4p.m. (at the Canadian Tire store on Walker Rd a proud sponsor of the WMHA), the midget AE travel team will be working a special Tag Day for the Southpoint midget AE player who lost everything to a house fire last week.

The Windsor midget AE team plays Southpoint on December 5th at home where the Windsor players will be giving 100% of the money raised to this player so that he can purchase some of the items (most teenagers have) that he lost.

Please get the word out to get support for this event. If you know of anyone that can help, they don't have to go to Canadian Tire to buy anything, they just have to drive up to give a donation.

I know this will be greatly appreciated by the player and his family.

Windsor Olympic Torchbearer Named

Tonight the 2010 Olympic Torchbearer for the Windsor leg of the nationwide relay was named at the city's "Together We Triumph" Gala at Caesars Windsor in the Augustus Ballroom.

And Windsor Mayor Eddie Francis announced that, person would be Matthew Charbonneau.

Who is Matthew Charbonneau you may ask?

You will remember that last year Matthew's older brother Cpl. Andrew Grenon was the first Windsor soldier killed September 3, 2008 fighting to rid the world of terrorism in Afghanistan.

To honour Grenon the City of Windsor has chosen his younger brother Mathew Charbeneau to light the cauldron on day 55 of the nationwide Olympic celebration which will culminate in downtown Windsor at the River front Plaza on December 23.

Cpl. Grenon was only 23 years old and he was a member of the 2nd Battalion, Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry serving in Afghanistan. Pictured here are Mathew and his mother Theresa Charbonneau.

The night's announcement included speeches by former Windsor Spitfire and NHL great Adam Graves, Spitfire Head Coach and former NHLer Bob Boughner, Canadian Paralympian Sledge Hockey Champion Ray Grassi, Mayor Eddie Francis and keynote speaker Red Wings Head Coach Mike Babcock.

It was a late night (10pm) for the gala's emcee, AM800's Steve Bell, he joked with the audience he has to get up for work at 3 am...we here at Biz X and In Play just start rocking and rolling then!! its when we get our finest work done!!

The Ontario Boxing Championships were held in Windsor this past weekend starting last Thursday to a capacity record of boxers in Windsor.

This was the Biggest Ontario Championships since boxing was incepted into the province. The big event was held at the Holiday Inn Select and had some of Ontario's best boxers competed to earn a spot on the provincials and hopefully the Olympics.

The major sponsor for the event was Andy Hui's website Throwing Bombs...the logo could be seen on all

The event was a Big success for the area, bringing in more than 24 clubs from around Ontario with Oshawa's Big Tyme Boxing Club bringing in 18 boxers to participate in this years event; the most of any club.

Jorge Britto Invades Maximum Fitness Centre Windsor!

Maximum Fitness Centre held a seminar on Brazilian Jiujitsu and Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) featuring Jorge Britto, 2009 Brazilian Jujitsu PAN American Master Champion at their facility located at 3850 Dougall Avenue in Windsor.

This was the first time Britto held a seminar in Canada. He was accompanied by Thomas Beach and Brown Belt Edwardo, to help teach students at the seminar.

“The event was a total success,” says Rino Belcastro, Co-Owner of Maximum Fitness Centre. “We were very excited to host Britto.
